Veteran debate coach and author Suzanne Nasser is teaming up with her daughter Samantha Nasser (National NCFCA competitor and collegiate champion) to bring Speech/Debate camps to the DFW area again this summer!

Student Camp: Introduction to Speech
Whether your child has a flair for the dramatic or prefers to avoid the spotlight at all costs, Speech camp is the perfect fit! This unique, interactive 2-day camp eases students out of their comfort zone exposing them to a variety of speech genres including interpretative, platform and limited prep events. Through exercises and practice, students will learn how to confidently brainstorm, compose and present a speech before an audience…. all in a fun and supportive environment! Student Camp: Advanced Speech - Interpretation and Acting
Drama holds a certain power that no other type of speech possesses: the power of the imagination. This workshop will give students the tools to help them learn how to tap into the imaginations of the audience and paint pictures in their minds. Discussions and exercises in cutting speeches, character development, physical and emotional performance, vocal control, and more will all be discussed in this whirlwind day of acting boot camp. Student Camp: Extemporaneous Speech
Extemporaneous speaking is a limited-preparation event where the speaker is given 30 minutes to prepare an original speech on a current event topic. Speakers are allowed to use published books, magazines, news articles, and other written sources to prepare their speeches during their prep time. Extemp topics are posed as questions about foreign, domestic or economic issues/events that have occurred during the past 90 days. Extemporaneous camp participants will learn the best sources for extemp research, approaches for club’s to organize and assign sources/categories as well as effective speech preparation and delivery techniques. Student Camp: Introduction to Team Policy Debate
Introduce your student to the fundamentals of Team Policy debate and the new Stoa/NCFCA debate resolution at this comprehensive 3-day debate camp. Students will learn the format/structure of Team Policy debate, case construction and foundational debate theory. They will delve into resolution research, begin to cultivate solid reasoning skills and learn to deliver their ideas persuasively. Introduce your student to the fundamentals of Lincoln Douglas debate and the new Stoa/NCFCA debate topic at our comprehensive 3-day debate camp. Students will be introduced to Lincoln Douglas debate structure, delve into historical and philosophical issues and learn to synthesize and present their ideas with eloquence and poise. Student Camp: Advanced/Intermediate LD
Experienced debaters are invited to jump-start the new season at this challenging 3-day Lincoln Douglas debate camp. Students will begin researching the new Stoa/NCFCA resolution, write a new case and solidify key skills to take their debating to the next level. This camp will emphasize logic/reasoning and critical thinking skills to help students identify and address the underlying mindset or philosophy behind the arguments they encounter. The ability to address arguments at their root is a skill which will help in all areas of life - no matter the topic. Students will be assigned to the Intermediate or Advanced track based on skill level and accomplishments. Camp will culminate with a round robin debate practice where students apply what they have learned and "test-drive" their new case, leaving well-prepared for the new 2010-2011 season. Student Camp: Advanced/Intermediate TP*
Experienced debaters are invited to jump-start the new season at this challenging 3-day Team Policy debate camp. Research assignments are sent out a few weeks after the new Stoa/NCFCA topic is announced to help students understand the history & current policies related to the new resolution. At camp we cover advanced theory, case evaluation, strategies and critiqued rounds. Reasoning and critical thinking is emphasized to help students identify and address the underlying mindset or philosophy behind proposed policies. Camp culminates with a round robin debate practice where students apply the techniques they learned and test out their new case, leaving well-prepared for the new 2010-2011 season! (Pre-camp assignment will be emailed to registered students three weeks before camp begins) *Note: Experienced debaters that have not competed at the Regional tournament, please sign-up for Intermediate TP camp. Student Camp: Model United Nations
Model United Nations (Model UN) provides an excellent forum for high-school students to learn how the world interacts through the United Nations. Students are able to gain an understanding of that interaction by acting as delegates for specific countries and undertaking the research required to play their roles effectively. Model UN is a fun and exciting way to learn the valuable life skills of researching, public speaking, and consensus building. Even for those who have participated in other speaking activities (such as debate), Model UN provides a unique opportunity to apply those skills to an international forum. Learning to communicate in an effective manner with peers representing nations all over the world is a challenging task that requires patience, quick thinking, and disciplined negotiating. This 3-day camp will introduce students to the format/rules governing Model UN conferences and provide comprehensive training for students wanting to enhance their diplomacy, advocacy and speaking. Camp will culminate with a mini Model UN conference where students apply the training they have received. Any student who has an interest in American politics, a foreign country, international affairs, or foreign relations is encouraged to take advantage of this exciting opportunity! Student Camp: Parliamentary Debate
Experienced debaters are invited to join us for this exciting new 3-day camp to introduce the format, rules and strategies involved in Stoa Parliamentary debate! Parliamentary debate (modeled after the British House of Parliament) is an extemporaneous two-on-two debate where teams debate a variety of political, philosophical, economic and cultural topics that they receive 15 minutes before the round. The limited prep time sets the stage for a competitive forum that emphasizes rigorous argumentation, logical analysis, quick thinking, breadth of knowledge, and rhetorical ability over preparation of evidence.
Parli is the ideal “next step” for experienced competitors who enjoy researching current events, to debate the ideas/events of their day. It’s also ideal for high-school juniors and seniors carrying heavy academic workloads to continue to sharpen their communication skills without the intense research commitment of policy debate. Camp will culminate with tournament-style practice rounds where students apply & solidify the concepts and techniques they learned. [Instructor: Samantha Nasser and Jake Aschmutat]
The Dallas Bar administers Mock Trial competition for high school students in the State of Texas which provides a great way for students to gain an insider’s view of the judicial system. Mock Trial is a fascinating activity where students analyze a new case each year and play the role of witnesses and attorneys to present a compelling case for the prosecution (why the defendant is guilty) or the defense (why the defendant is not guilty). The goal of this camp is to expose high-school students to the format and strategies involved in Mock Trial and prepare students to compete in the 2010-2011 season.
